INTERNATIONAL ORDER OF RAINBOW FOR GIRLS
GRAND ASSEMBLY OF KENTUCKY
CHOOSE JOY SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Scholarships are awarded each year at Grand Assembly to Rainbow Girls who are members in good standing of Kentucky Rainbow Assemblies and are attending college or some form of higher education. Awards are based on financial need, academic merit, Rainbow service, community service, and previous scholarship awards.
Purpose:
The Choose Joy Scholarship Fund was created in an effort to encourage young women to attend institutions of higher learning and to help make such a worthy endeavor possible by providing financial assistance. The scholarship awards are gifts and the applicant is not expected to refund or in any way pay back the money to the Grand Assembly. There are no restrictions placed on what field of study a girl may wish to enter.
Qualifications:
Your scholarship committee will review applications to make awards based on several factors; An applicant must demonstrate academic success (a minimum of 2.5 cumulative GPA); must show active Rainbow service measured by years of service, perfect attendance awards, offices held both locally and for Grand Assembly, and the number of petitions sponsored during the last calendar year; must have been a member in good standing of Kentucky Rainbow for at least three years; and must be a member of an Assembly which has made a contribution to the Scholarship fund within the last calendar year.
There has been great interest and competition for scholarships in the last few years and the committee has had a difficult time in narrowing down the list of applicants to recipients. This year, as was the case last year, all other factors being equal, there will be special emphasis placed on the number of petitions sponsored by an applicant in the last calendar year.
Awards:
We are able to award a significant monetary amount. We owe appreciation to our sponsoring bodies for the opportunity to award scholarships of $500 in June with the chance for each girl to receive an award in the Spring for an additional $500 (starting with the 2024-2025 Renewal) if her grades remain above 2.5 cumulative GPA. The awards will be made at Grand Assembly and checks mailed for the spring semester. It will be the responsibility of the recipient to forward her grades/credits from the fall semester to Patti Mayhew postmarked no later than January 15 verifying a cumulative 2.5 GPA to be eligible for the Spring Award. Spring awards for those qualifying will be mailed in February/March.
Once a girl has been awarded a scholarship and wishes to reapply in subsequent years, she need file only the short Renewal Application with a copy of her transcript for review at Grand Assembly and it will be considered with all other new applications at that time.
Any girl interested in an initial application for an award should complete the Initial Scholarship Application. Along with the Initial Application, there must be enclosed the following four requirements:
- Three letters of recommendation. See application for list of sources.
- One letter of request written by the applicant stating why she is applying for the Choose Joy Scholarship.
- A transcript of the applicant’s grades/credits from the last school attended, whether high school or college.
- A recent photograph
These four requirements are mandated by the Grand Assembly for an initial application and the Committee is not at liberty to act on any application until all of the four requirements have been submitted.
Should you have any questions concerning the scholarship, its requirements, or awards, please do not hesitate to contact me, or any member of the Committee. We are pleased to be a part of your Grand Assembly encouraging young girls to seek higher education.
All scholarship award checks will be sent directly to the applicant. I encourage any girl who will be attending college to apply for the Choose Joy Scholarship.
The deadline for application is a week before Grand Assembly. All application and supporting documentation should be mailed to:
